San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro appointed the Mayor’s Fitness Council (MFC) in May 2010.  The mission of the Mayor’s Fitness Council is to transform San Antonio into a healthier and more active community in which citizens, groups, and organizations achieve targeted health and fitness goals through initiatives in the following areas:  
  • Media and Promotions
  • Fitness
  • Nutrition
  • Healthy Schools
  • Worksite Wellness
  • Policy
The Mayor’s Fitness Council is taking action to:
  • Develop a Student Ambassador Program for youth to promote health and fitness in their schools and local communities.
  • Conduct Healthy Schools Summits where San Antonio’s school districts gather to discuss health and wellness policies in schools, share best practices, and report on progress of health initiatives.
  • Offer free group exercise classes in city parks to San Antonio residents through Fitness in the Parks.
  • Train San Antonio residents to lead Neighborhood Walking Groups throughout San Antonio.

The MFC is being established within a non-profit structure supporting the SA2020 bold vision for making San Antonio’s residents among the healthiest in the nation by the year 2020.  To improve the health and wellness of the residents of San Antonio, it is going to take sustained community-wide effort with involvement of city government, citizens, business, non-profits, schools, and health leaders.

The Mayor’s Fitness Council (MFC) is a community-wide movement to reduce obesity in San Antonio.  The mission of the MFC is to transform San Antonio into a healthier and more active community in which citizens, groups, and organizations achieve targeted health and fitness goals.  We welcome opportunities to endorse events or programs that meet our endorsement criteria.
